The murder case against Nick Reiner will not proceed until September.

The 32 year old was charged with killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 70, after they were found stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood, California, on 14 December, 2025, but pleaded not guilty in February.

And at a brief hearing in Los Angeles on Wednesday (29.04.26), officials explained there had been delays in the release of the couple's autopsies, the Los Angeles Times newspaper reports.

Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung admitted prosecutors still have nearly two terabytes of discovery to provide to the defense and autopsy reports in the case are not yet complete.

It is unclear why the reports haven't been finished, with a spokesperson for the LA County Medical Examiner explaining both cases remain on "security hold via court order initiated by the" Los Angeles Police Department.

Nick - who wore a yellow jail jumper - barely spoke during the hearing, except to answer "yes" to a few questions from the judge in the case, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta.

He will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing on 15 September.

Nick was accused of fatally stabbing his parents, with prosecutors alleging the killings followed an argument the night before at a party.

Screenwriter Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders.

He has been held without bail in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Nick is represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, after his former lawyer, the famed criminal defence attorney Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case before a January hearing, saying at the time his team had "no choice but to withdraw and ask to be relieved".

The LA County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Rob and Michele died from "multiple sharp force injuries" and ruled that their deaths were homicide.

Nick was arrested and charged shortly after their bodies were discovered.

At his first court appearance that month he wore a suicide prevention smock, though he was seen without it during a subsequent hearing.

Nick has struggled with drug addiction for years and has been in and out of rehabilitation.
