'Columbo' actor Peter Falk's daughter dies by suicide at 60

NEW YORK — The 60-year-old daughter of late “Columbo” star Peter Falk has died by suicide.
Jacqueline Falk died by hanging on Monday, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Her death occurred in a Los Angeles home.
Her father died in his Beverly Hills home in 2011 after battling dementia and Alzheimer’s. The New York City native became a household name by playing the deceptively clever Lt. Columbo on the long-running mystery program “Columbo” from 1971 to 1978. Peter revived that character in later years.
He married Alyce Mayo in 1960. The pair adopted two daughters — Jacqueline and Catherine — according to TMZ. Catherine told Closer magazine in 2016 that she and “Jackie” enjoyed ice skating with their dad and somehow survived riding in a car with him behind the wheel. Peter lost an eye to a tumor as a child, and kept his other eye on his daughters while driving.
“We were always in a panic because he would go through red lights or wind up on the sidewalk!” Catherine recalled.
A note on The Catherine Falk Organization website says Peter wasn’t in close contact with his daughters as his mental health declined in his later years. That group champions legislation to empower family members caring for ailing loved ones.
It was started after Catherine alleged that the actor’s second wife filed for conservatorship over her incapacitated husband and engaged in “constant interference” to stop his daughters from visiting their dad.
“Although Catherine fought for her right to visit Mr. Falk, his other daughter Jackie did not do so,” according to the organization’s website. “As a consequence, she was unable to visit with her father for the last three years of her life.”
The organization said Peter’s daughters learned about their father’s death through media reports and were not provided information about his burial.
It’s not known whether Jacqueline was otherwise ill at the time of her death. It’s also not clear if a note was left behind. People magazine said she led a private life away from the bright lights of show business.
