Barry Keoghan is opening up about his split with Sabrina Carpenter, specifically how rumors about their breakup and the subsequent fallout forced him off social media and out of the public eye.

The “Saltburn” star discussed his retreat from the spotlight during a recent appearance on Benny Blanco‘s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast with Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco.

“I came off Instagram and social profiles. I’ve stopped going to events. I’ve stopped just socializing,” Keoghan told the podcasters on Tuesday. “It’s because there was a narrative out there that was never really sort of even spoken on — a narrative that’s not true — and I never confirmed or said anything about it. And I just disappeared.”

When Lil Dicky asked if he was referring to rumors about his breakup with the “Manchild” singer, Keoghan responded: “Yeah, that I cheated.”

The “Peaky Blinders” actor was first linked to Carpenter in December 2023, and they confirmed their relationship in 2024. Keoghan went on to star in Carpenter’s music video for “Please, Please, Please” before they officially split after a year of dating. Speculation immediately followed surrounding what caused their beak-up, including that Keoghan was unfaithful.

The cheating rumors were in part fueled by influencer Breckie Hill, who reposted claims that she was a homewrecker and forced Keoghan and Carpenter’s breakup. In a later video, she denied having any sort of relationship with Keoghan, adding that she only reposted the allegations because she found them ridiculous.

“No one seemed to latch onto that video,” Keoghan said Tuesday of Hill’s post denying an affair.

“I’m not asking for people to become my fan and like me because that’s not normal either,” he continued. “But I’m asking for people to stop assuming and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me and dragging me down in any way you can, involving my parents who are no longer with me… just absolutely disgusting and vile.”
