An epic sci-fi adventure tops the DVD releases for the week of Aug. 11.

"Project Hail Mary": Ryan Gosling stars as an unassuming science teacher who finds himself alone in space trying to save the world and befriending an alien. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, adapted from Andy Weir's bestselling 2021 novel.

"Executed with incredible craft and style and a whole lot of heart, 'Project Hail Mary' verges on the edge of being too saccharinely sweet," writes Tribune News Service critic Katie Walsh in her review. "But sci-fi can serve many different purposes for audiences, and maybe that sweetness, combined with a story of cooperation and collaboration for self-preservation, is just the kind of balm we need to take the edge off right now."

"Barbarian": A woman arrives at her Airbnb and discovers it's already inhabited by another renter ... and that's the best thing that happens to her in this bone-rattling horror film from writer-director Zach Cregger.

"Hokum": A man (Adam Scott) travels to the hotel where his parents honeymooned in order to spread their ashes and encounters a terrifying haunting.

"EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert": Baz Luhrmann's glorious concert film made up of never-seen footage of Elvis Presley performing in Las Vegas.

"Tuner": A talented piano tuner gets swept into a life of crime when he discovers an ability to crack safes. Featuring Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman and Alisen Richmond-Peck.

"Brothers under Fire": Action flick centered on a special forces group that is called into service to battle a cartel while at a destination wedding in Mexico. With Kiefer Sutherland.

"Signal One": Isabelle Fuhrman, David Thewlis and Dennis Quaid star in this sci-fi film about a group of scientists searching for alien life at the behest of a tech billionaire.

OUT ON DIGITAL HD AUG. 11

"Minions & Monsters": The franchise's latest entry is a love letter to Hollywood in which we learn about a trio of filmmaking Minions who gatecrash the studio system of the 1920s, strike out on their own to make an independent monster movie, and have to save the world from what they unleash.

"The Invite": This comedy, the latest directorial effort from Olivia Wilde, sees her also sharing the screen with Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton in this tale of a very awkward couples dinner party.
