Samantha Morton has claimed a director once mistook her for Emily Watson.

The Odyssey actress has recalled working on the 2005 movie River Queen, and alleged that director Vincent Ward told her "[I've] loved you since you were in Breaking the Waves".

Samantha made the claim while on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, when she was asked if she'd ever been mistaken for someone else and, if so, when was the last time it happened.

She then laughed to host Josh Horowitz: "Oh, it's not mistaken. I went to New Zealand to do a movie and the director said, 'We're so excited to have you, Emily. I've loved you since you were in Breaking the Waves.

"I was like, 'Are you joking?' I said to the producer, 'I'm Samantha. Does he know that I'm Samantha Morton?' He said, 'Don't tell him. He thinks you're Emily Watson.'"

Samantha went on to describe the filming of the movie as a "sad job", as she added: "I was like, 'What the?' So I always get mistaken for the amazing, the one and only, extraordinary Emily Watson."

And Emily isn't the only famous face Samantha is sometimes mistaken for.

She said: "Or Stella McCartney, which I love, and I'm wearing Stella McCartney."

Following Samantha's allegation, Vincent Ward spoke out to deny the claim, and insisted it would have been "impossible" to mistake her for anyone else.

Asked by Entertainment Weekly if he remember the alleged mistake, Ward replied: "No not at all. She had health issues during the film. But in fact I had admired her work in a range of films including Minority Report, In America, and others.

"She is a very unique performer, it would be impossible to confuse her for anyone else, and I had pushed very hard to have her in the film even though it caused us some challenges."

While he didn't go into any details, Ward was replaced as the director of River Queen by Alun Bollinger, before being reinstated once filming had finished and the scenes were sent to post-production.
