Shania Twain resorted to "very unhealthy things" to try and lose weight.
The 60-year-old singer admitted she refused to look at herself in the mirror when she was going through the menopause because she didn't like the way her body had changed, particularly because she felt "bloated" and her previous ways of maintaining her physique were no longer working.
Discussing her feelings during her Las Vegas residency in 2019, she told The Sunday Times magazine: "In menopause you lose control of your body. So all of a sudden I'm bloating and I'm definitely not in control. I can't just lose five pounds."
"I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body. I'm, like, 'Oh, I cannot stand this changing body.' But that was so unhealthy. Who cannot look at themselves in the mirror?"
Shania cut out fats and sugars, and upped her exercise regime.
She noted: "I was malnourished. To be thinner...
"I was doing very unhealthy things. And I was working my body more than I was feeding it, to keep up with the strain."
Ultimately, the Man! I Feel Like a Woman singer realised she had to change her mindset and by kinder to herself after her regime made a thigh injury worse and slowed down her recovery.
She said: "Now I'm, like, bring on the mirrors, I'm going to look at myself all day long!
"Menopause has been very good for me because I've learnt that some things you cannot control."
Shania - who has 24-year-old son Eja with ex-husband Mutt Lange and is married to Frederic Thiebaud - may be in her 60s now, but she's got no plans to slow down.
She said: "I'm not slowing down and I'll tell you why.
"I just keep finding new things that I love to do.
"I've got a genuine explorer's heart and I haven't run out of things to explore. And maybe I will No!
"I never will. I mean, come on, there's always a new flower, new recipe, new horse -- there's always something new."
And the You're Still the One singer is "very happy" with the person she is today.
She said: "I'm sure that people look at my photos from when I was in my thirties, and now I'm in my sixties and you can see I'm different.
"This is my 60-year-old menopausal self and I have been through these phases and now I'm, like, yeah! I'm very happy to be myself. Bring it on."
