Elle Fanning is returning for a second season of Margo's Got Money Troubles.

The 28-year-old actress stars in the title role of the hit Apple TV comedy drama series, and a week before the season one finale, the streamer has made a decision on its future.

Elle, who will also serve as an executive producer, said in a statement: "Having the opportunity to bring more of Margo's troubles, creativity, fearless spirit and authenticity to audiences with a second season makes me incredibly happy and excited.

"I can promise everyone they're in for a wild, messy and beautiful ride."

The show is based on Rufi Thorpe's novel of the same name, and follows college student Margo, who turns to OnlyFans to support herself and her baby after becoming pregnant.

The cast also features Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman as her parents, a former Hooters waitress, and a professional wrestler.

Eva Anderson, whose was a writer and executive producer for the first season, will join creator David E. Kelley as co-showrunner.

Elle added: "Embarking on the adventure of bringing Margo to the screen has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

"When I first read Rufi's stunning story, it felt wholly original and, most importantly, human. "Then, with David's writing, along with our epic cast of heart-wrenching performances, it truly felt like we had something special.

The A24 production, which also includes Thaddea Graham and Nicole Kidman, was immediately an "irresistible proposition" for creator David.

He said: "I fell in love with Rufi's world and unpredictable characters, and it's been rewarding to see audiences embrace this series. We can't wait to continue this story with our partners at Apple and A24."

Meanwhile, Apple TV's head of programming Matt Cherniss insisted that "audiences have wanted to spend more time with these riveting characters and the brilliant cast behind them".

He said: "We're excited to watch Margo and the entire family continue to defy the odds in season two in the way only they can -- with humour, determination and creativity."

The project required Elle to develop more than one character, and the star has explained how she approached playing aspiring writer Margo Millet and her OnlyFans persona HungryGhost.

She told E! News: "With HungryGhost, even the costumes that we came up with, I love that they're kind of DIY at times. We have Susie -- played by Thaddea Graham -- who's my roommate, and she's a cosplayer, and she designs costumes.

"So, we were thinking, 'Gosh, what would Susie design for Margo?' We had a lot of fun with it."

Elle took the character's aesthetics even further, painting herself blue for the role.

She said: "We decided, 'Why don't we just paint myself blue?' So on those days, it took a lot of time in the makeup chair, but they had to cover me in this turquoise paint. But I liked it."
