Television Q&A: Where can I holster a copy of 'Annie Get Your Gun'?
Published in Entertainment News
You have questions. I have some answers.
Q: I'm a fan of the old movie musicals and have been hoping to see "Annie Get Your Gun" with (I think) Betty Hutton and Howard Keel. It may not have been released. Do you know if it is available anywhere?
A: For those of you tuning in late, “Annie Get Your Gun” is a 1950 screen musical starring (as you correctly remembered!) Betty Hutton as Annie Oakley and Howard Keel as Frank Butler. “The Movie Guide” calls it a “sprightly songfest that … captivated audiences” even if it was short on the dancing many musical fans expected. It did include hit songs by Irving Berlin, among them “Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”
The movie has been released on DVD, including in a set of four musicals with Howard Keel (the others being “Show Boat,” “Kiss Me Kate” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” (You may want to check your local library’s listings.) It’s also a digital download from Prime Video, Fandango at Home and Apple TV.
Q: When will “The Lincoln Lawyer” return?
A: A fifth season of the drama based on Michael Connelly’s novels began production in Los Angeles in March. It’s expected to air sometime in 2027. Netflix says lawyer Mickey Haller (played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) finds his world “upended when the half-sister he never knew existed, Emi, [played by Cobie Smulders] comes to him with a plea to help free a wrongfully convicted woman. In a season defined by blood ties and buried secrets, Mickey takes on a grueling habeas petition to overturn a six-year-old murder conviction, but the deeper he digs, the more nefarious the forces arrayed against him become.”
Q: “Virgin River” Is excellent to watch. I am wondering if it will be back.
A: It will. The romantic drama reportedly started filming its eighth season this month. I don’t know when that season will air. Netflix’s online companion Tudum says: “Born with a heart issue, the child Mel [Alexandra Breckenridge] and her husband, Jack [Martin Henderson], have wanted for so long is now under the care of one of the world’s leading pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons — who also happens to be Mel’s ex, Eli (Austin Nichols). [Showrunner Patrick Sean] Smith tells Tudum that Season 8 will focus on 'the challenges that raising a child with special physical needs puts on their marriage and how challenging it is to be new parents, much less new parents in such a high-stakes situation.'"
And if you’re wondering why that site is called Tudum, say it out loud.
Q: I watch “Perry Mason” daily. I note that they constantly refer to money using denominations of $1,000 or more. I believe they are wrong, because for decades the largest U.S. currency bill has been $100. Why did they continue to make this mistake? Poetic license or what?
A: It’s a dramatic flourish, since I’d be impressed by anyone with a $1,000 bill, including in that 1957-66 series and other productions. While the $1,000 bill was no longer printed by "Mason's" time, it was still legal tender and in circulation. Today, the U.S. government website says, “American paper currency comes in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills.” (There was also, in the 1930s, a $100,000 bill.) The larger bills were originally intended “primarily for interbank transactions,” and the government began taking them out of circulation in 1969. You might still come across the larger bills, although “most notes still in circulation are probably in the hands of private numismatic dealers and collectors." The government says that "circulating large denomination notes received in the normal course of business are destroyed.”
